Bainbridge Island Land Trust conserved via land acquisition 13.27 acres of undeveloped shoreline and associated riparian, wetland, and stream habitat in Little Manzanita Bay, Bainbridge Island. The property hosts estuarine (1.36 acres of tidelands), 1697 linear feet (.32 miles) of undeveloped shoreline (based on OHHW), 1.98 acres of wetlands, and approximately 1,346 linear feet (.25 miles) of stream habitat, including Manzanita and North Fork Manzanita Creek. The creeks are important to all salmonids and cutthroat trout. Little Manzanita Bay is identified in the West Sound Nearshore Integration and Synthesis of Chinook Salmon Recovery Priorities (2016) as the #1 area for protection of tidal flow and # 8 overall for recommended protection of important salmon habitat. Bainbridge Island Land Trust owns and stewards this property as a preserve, known as the Miller Kirkman Preserve, with well managed passive public use planned for the future. The property was well infested upon purchase with ground English Ivy (covering approximately 80,000 square feet) as well as ivy on trees, English Holly, Himalayan Blackberry and other invasive plants. The Vegetation Management Plan, which is a subsection of the overall Stewardship and Management Plan for the property (completed as part of this project), included an inventory of plant species and guided multi year restoration actions using an integrated approach (manual, mechanical, chemical) to vegetation management using volunteers, contractors and staff. The primarily focus of the restoration actions performed under the project were extensive removal and management of invasive plants to improve the richness of the riparian habitat. Over 440 stems of ivy, holly or other woody species were chemically treated. Handpulling of ground ivy, blackberry, scotch broom has taken place over the years of the project, making extensive headway on revitalizing the landscape to feature native plants. Annual maintenance and follow up work is ongoing. The original scope of work included planting. However, due to the extensive nature of the invasive species, and the amount of native species on the property, work was focused on restoration efforts, rather than replanting efforts. Revegetation with native plants will occur in the future, if necessary, once invasive plants are completely under control.
