The Bainbridge Island Land Trust proposes to acquire 22.85 acres of undeveloped forested wetland, stream and associated riparian habitat in the Springbrook Creek Watershed, Bainbridge Island, WA. In addition, the Land Trust proposes to restore fish passage to 0.22 miles of excellent rearing habitat in Springbrook Creek by replacing a non-passable culvert with a pedestrian bridge (as part of carefully planned public access), remove invasive plant species on the property, and replant some areas with native plants. The Springbrook Creek Watershed Assessment (SRFB Project # 14-1517) identified the preserve location as hosting some of the highest quality stream and wetland conditions within the entire watershed; it was one of five high priority projects identified in the Assessment. Springbrook Creek flows cold and clear within the preserve with water monitoring indicating this is the only area within the watershed to meet temperature water quality standards year round. The stream is designated critical habitat for federally listed threatened O. mykiss, Puget Sound Steelhead. While adult steelhead have not be documented for some time, protection and restoration actions like this project are needed to help recover the species. Coho and cutthroat are documented throughout the watershed and up to the non-passable culvert on the preserve. A conceptual design for culvert removal is done and final design/permitting will be completed in this project.
