DESCRIPTION
This projectl is a large woody debris (LWD) project in the mainstem of the Pysht River on forest land owned by Merrill and Ring. We initiated large-scale restoration using ground-based equipment between RM 10.0-11.5 over a two year period. In 2009 we installed 16 logjams on the upper portion of the project reach. In 2011 an additional 8 logjams were constructed in the lower project reach. Because of past management practices the Pysht has low levels of instream LWD and riparian forest conditions are currently inadequate to support habitat forming processes. The treated reach includes recovering plane-bed and pool-riffle habitats that support important populations of coho, chum, and chinook salmon, steelhead and cutthroat trout. Constructed logjams utilized multiple sizes of LWD to mimic the structure of naturally formed logjams. Logjams were constructed in plane-bed morphologies to promote habitat diversity and floodplain connectivity. The logjams will slow water velocities through backwatering, while providing boundary conditions that increase local sheer stress on the channel bed resulting in scour pool development. Habitat diversity is expected to increase at logjam sites as plane-bed habitats evolve to those seen in pool-riffle and forced pool riffle type channels. Habitat quality will also increase as pool area expands and complex cover is provided. This proposal represents the first large scale restoration project conducted on the mainstem Pysht River. The project also connects two previous reach scale LWD projects from 2001& 2005.
