DESCRIPTION
This proposal involves large woody debris (LWD) projects in WRIA 19 streams that have had previous similar projects. In Deep Creek, we constructed 6 channel spanning logjams using ground-based equipment between river mile 0.2-1.3. The logjams will use multiple sizes of large wood to mimic the natural condition in this floodplain migration channel. Logjams were constructed in plain bed morphology habitats. The logjams will slow water velocities through backwatering, while providing boundary conditions that increase local sheer stress on the channel bed resulting in scour pool development. Habitat diversity is expected to increase at logjam sites as plain bed habitats evolve to those seen in pool-riffle type channels. Habitat quality will also increase as pool area expands and complex cover is provided. This proposal represents the fifth in-channel habitat restoration project conducted on Deep Creek by the Tribe since 1997. Two watershed analysis documents (1995/2002) have been completed and are guiding restoration efforts in Deep Creek. For the SF Pysht, we added LWD using both ground based and helicopter assisted placement techniques. LWD was be placed as free key pieces and as constructed logjams. Plain bed channel reaches were targeted for placement in river mile 0.0-0.5, 0.8-2.0, and 4.0-5.5. These are the remaining untreated reaches following previous cooperative restoration projects between Merrill & Ring and the Tribe.
