DESCRIPTION
The Skokomish Indian Tribe, Tacoma Power, and Mason Conservation District, Washington RCO SRFB, along with the Puget Sound Nearshore Partnership, and National Coastal Wetlands Conservation, restored tidal/river hydrology to the Skokomish Estuary in Hood Canal. This project obliterated island dikes and levees, roads, and borrow ditches, improving salmonid refugia, water quality, and river functions. Phase 2, the Nalley island restoration was a great example of collaboation between the State, HCCC, MCD and the Skokomish Tribe. The lead engineer and the Tribes project manager used a team approach in the development of the design elements and implementation. Project objectives implemented Ø Total Excavation: 98397 cubic yards Ø Borrow Ditch Fill: 32536 cubic yards Ø Waste Material: 65861 cubic yards cubic yards Ø Access Bridge: 205’ length, 35’ spans Ø Dike Length Removed: 12720 feet, or 2.4 miles Ø Installation of PUD pools Ø Reinforcement of tower pads Ø Construction and deconstruction of a temporary access bridge Ø Restoring approximately 214 acres of estuary
