The Skokomish Indian Tribe used this funding for the Skokomish River Nalley Island Levee Removal project, which helped implement Phase I restoration west of Nalley Slough in 2007. Project accomplishments included 4,990 linear feet of dike removed, 2992 linear feet of tower walkway constructed, and 113.6 acres of estuary restored to tidal inundation. This project evolved from a stand-alone project to a large scale phased restoration project. An additional Nalley Island was surveyed and a design was developed for implementation in 2009. The survey helped identify the work on Nalley Island, which will include restoring 214 acres, removing 11,500 linear feet of existing dike, filling 14,600 linear feet of burrow ditches, and replacing PUD pools and armoring of Tacoma tower pads. This project is part of a comprehensive restoration of the Skokomish watershed and lower Hood Canal. Restoration of tidal inundation will start a natural process to restore the native intertidal vegetation and formation of tidal channels. This in turn will restore critical intertidal habitat for endangered salmon and other fish and wildlife species. It will also restore natural tidal flushing of river sediment at the river’s mouth to help correct unnatural river aggradation, relieve upstream flooding in populated areas, improve water quality by biofiltration, and restore the natural shoreline fine sediment supply that is critical for shellfish.
