DESCRIPTION
Washington Trout (now Wild Fish Conservancy) designed and installed 5 engineered logjams (ELJs) and removed approx.150 cu yards of bank armoring along the lower mainstem Dosewallips River. This project funded the ELJ construction, bank armor removal along 800 feet of shoreline, interpretive sign installation, invasive species control, and native species plantings along the lower mainstem river channel below SR 101. This work continued a highly successful partnership between Washington Trout, Hood Canal Coordinating Council , Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, Washington State Parks and Recreation, and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. In a previous phase, we removed 1000 feet of an estuarine dike restoring 5 acres of salt marsh, removed exotic blackberry and replanted native tree and shrub species on 5 acres, designed and installed two interpretive signs, and developed a conceptual reach analysis to guide the phase 2 work. In early 2005, we were awarded $150,000 from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to partially fund design, permitting, and construction of ELJs at Dosewallips State Park. Our analysis of river-wide and within-reach environmental conditions revealed a chronic lack of key large woody debris (LWD) pieces that are the primary structural components of habitat-forming log jams critical to salmon. This lower one-half mile of the Dosewallips River represents a stronghold for threatened Hood Canal summer chum and Puget Sound Chinook.
