DESCRIPTION
The historic dike system constructed on the salt marsh face by a previous landowner was meant to increase marginal pasture land for a dairy farm. However, construction of the dike system also decreased tidal inundation which resulted in decreased tidal channel complexity and robustness, in addition to altering the vegetation community on the marsh face and in the upper shrub community. Removal of one half of the dike sytem has been completed with a small excavator and hand crew and results are being monitored. Update: Under phase 1, we removed 1,000 feet of an estuarine dike restoring 40 acres of salt marsh, removed exotic blackberry and replanted native tree and shrub species on 5 acres, designed and installed two interpretive signs, and developed a conceptual reach analysis to guide the phase 2 work.
