Wild Fish Conservancy (WFC), in partnership with the Hood Canal Coordinating Council, Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, Washington State Parks and Recreation, and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, undertook a variety of estuarine restoration measures in the Dosewallips River estuary in Brinnon, WA, on Hood Canal. Though the project scope encompasses the entire Dosewallips estuarine delta, Phase 1 work targeted publicly owned lands held by State Parks, which constitute most of the of the lower river and the tidally influenced delta fan. Our approach was to complete restoration actions on public lands to build public trust and understanding of effective salmon habitat restoration while improving estuarine habitat conditions for juvenile Chinook, summer chum, and other estuary-dependent fish and wildlife species. The restoration guidance team, composed of multiple stakeholders, identified, prioritized, designed, and implemented project actions. Phase 1 included distributary slough and estuarine marsh restoration through the removal of a remnant salt marsh levee that restored full tidal inundation and sheet flow across a 5-acre area of salt marsh. Non-native blackberries were removed from 4 acres, and coniferous plantings were done in the area. In-kind support included: donated plant materials, volunteer time, agency staff time for pre-project planning and permitting, and work products from an ongoing watershed assessment. This was the first phase in a multi-year effort in the Lower Dosewallips that is planned to continue through 2013, resulting in major restoration work throughout the Lower Dosewallips river and its estuary.
