DESCRIPTION
The North Olympic Salmon Coalition used this funding to purchase as conservation easement and to restore four acres of riparian buffer adjacent to two similar, already-completed restoration projects. Approximately 3600 feet of channel improvement was completed. Reed canary grass was removed and pools were excavated to increase the channel complexity and flow capacity. Large woody debris (LWD) was buried in both sides of the bank to deflect flow and wood clusters were established in the pools for hiding and rearing habitat. A side channel was created on a low lying meander with LWD for high flow habitat. This area was hydro-seeded for erosion control. All excavated materials were spread on site to create micro-topographic relief for revegetation. Planting of native trees and shrubs (Douglas fir, Nootka rose, twinberry) and livestock exclusion fencing were completed. A waterline lying in the stream was removed and reconnected to a utility meter outside the floodplain. Spawning gravel was placed in the stream to enhance riffle beds. The project included 30 large wood placements, 6 rock placements, 12 deflector log placements, and 3 log snag perch poles Coho appeared weeks early on the first rain and began using the gravel within days of the project’s completion. The project improved the overall stream conditions in the lower Chimacum watershed by reducing sedimentation, increasing dissolved oxygen and reducing nutrient loading that effect egg survival of summer chum. The restoration improved rearing and spawning habitat for coho, cutthroat and steelhead. Water quality, fish presence and plant survival monitoring through 2005 will include partnerships with Jefferson County Conservation District, Wild Olympic Salmon, Trout Unlimited, and Chimacum Schools.
