Phase 2 of Pulling Together in Restoration achieved the intended goals of the project through the creation of coastal watershed-focused jobs, coastal partnerships, and capacity-building in ED/RR invasive species prevention, which resulted in significant outcomes and accomplishments in resource protection, including: • Pushed back invasive non-native plants affecting timber production, carbon storage, fish and wildlife habitats, livestock forage, and increasing the risk of catastrophic fires across five coastal watersheds, over 7,806 acres and 770.4 miles • Prevented trillions of seeds and propagules from spreading, removing 10,000 pounds of seeds and flowers across the watersheds; especially along roads and rivers that act as invasion pathways • Over $1,000,000 invested in 20 full-time local jobs, gear from local stores, services such as printing and river guides, rent, and above all, protection of natural resources that form the foundation of the coastal economy and environment • Expanded awareness and built capacity for additional ED/RR projects and crews across the coast, partnering with tribes, agencies, municipalities, large and small private landowners • Provided invasive prevention and treatment services to tribes, agencies, and landowners, targeting species’ pathways and vectors in the format of a watershed-scale invasive plant management plan • Integrated ED/RR into land and resource management programs and strategies across the five coastal watersheds including the WRIA 20 Lead Entity Salmon Restoration Strategy, a regional culvert inventory, and projects at WDFW enhancement facilities and sites • Caught, treated, and reported five Class A state or county noxious weed priority species in two watersheds before spread: Wild chervil, arundo donax, spotted jewelweed, orange hawkweed, and Russian olive • Connected local youth with job training, a stewardship ethic, and ecological education, and provided support for three to graduate from high school • Conducted 8 field tours, 6 trainings, and 14 demonstrations to empower community members to control invasive plants on their property • Made 26 additional project presentations to forums, community meetings, and conferences including the State Salmon Recovery Conference in 2018 • Working with Olympic Region DNR, trained four crews of 10 with supervisors from Olympic Correction Camp in Scotch broom removal, who will be deployed on roadways and gravel mines in 2020 • Working with Washington DOT, came within a hair’s breadth of a novel Adopt-A-Highway agreement… soon to be completed • Started the conversation for the formation of a Coastal Conservation Corps program • Protected millions of dollars of coastal salmon recovery and restoration investments from the deleterious impacts of non-native invasive plants.
