DESCRIPTION
Segment 4 from @RM 10.5 to RM 13.0 has been identified as having the least number of deep pools and the lowest pool frequency in the entire 13 miles of the surveyed stream network. Habitat forming key piece LWD is almost non-existent. There is Coho and Steelhead utilization throughout Segment 4. Project goals are to design and strategically place LWD structures to create small, stable debris jams thereby increasing pool habitat and habitat diversity. Segment 4 is a low gradient, low discharge channel with good access, making LWD placement both feasible and practical.
Project deliverables included final design and strategically placed large wood structures creating small, stable debris jams and thereby increasing pool habitat and habitat diversity. In September 2021 a chinook helicopter flew for 4.5 hours to place about 500,000 lbs of woody debris in approximately 90 pieces and 75 trips. Of the 14 sites identified to receive LWD placement all but one had wood placed. The furthest upstream site was chosen to not receive LWD because of the lack of material and time; being the upper most site it has the least flow and least chance of making significant impact. A mix of native conifers were also be planted strategically along the riparian corridor to enhance long-term restoration.
