DESCRIPTION
The SRFB funded the feasibility analysis and 50% design in 2008. RCO Project #08-1924 provides details of the project goals. Generally, the Fobes Reach Instream Project seeks to build on the specific habitat restoration objectives and conceptual design developed for the project reach in the Upper South Fork Nooksack Habitat Assessment (Brown and Maudlin, 2007). The 1.5-mile Fobes project reach is the core spawning area for ESA-listed South Fork chinook and is also used by Threatened steelhead and bulltrout for migration and rearing, along with several other species of anadromous salmon. The project installed 14 engineered logjams on the bars adjacent to the channel with the goals of creating local scour pools and splitting flow. This will increase habitat diversity, key habitat quantity (pools), improve habitat in a thermal refuge area (Fobes Creek), and may improve groundwater-surface water interaction. Togther these are the main habitat limiting factors in the South Fork Nooksack. The project builds on the Larson's Bridge Historic-scale Logjam Project, completed in 2001 immediately upstream.
