DESCRIPTION
The Fobes Reach planning project is located on the South Fork Nooksack River near RM 18 in Hamilton in Skagit County. With consultant Herrera Environmental Consultants, Lummi Natural Resources conducted a feasibility analysis and developed 100% design with permit applications. The reach is heavily used for holding, spawning, and rearing by threatened spring Chinook and other species. Past land use activities, such as riparian harvest have disrupted the habitat-forming processes and reduced the productivity of the habitat in a core area for the South Fork Chinook population. The reach is an area where the river has historically migrated across its floodplain, resulting in many relict channels, most of which maintain connection during periods of high flow. The goal is to increase holding and rearing habitat by scouring pools adjacent to stable accumulations of woody debris in the reach. Over the longer-term, flow splitting and deflection associated with the structures should lead to improved planform diversity and increased secondary channel formation, which is critical for reducing scour in the main channel during floods. The reach contains abundant unstable pieces of wood that can be stabilized to increase the habitat functions, such as pool formation and flow splitting, of woody debris in the channel. The final project design included the placement of 14 engineered logjams to improve habitat quality in the Fobes thermal refuge area.
