DESCRIPTION
Blue Mountain Land Trust conducted an assessment of landowner interest in pursuing conservation easements and a priority evaluation to help prioritize and focus future work in preventing degradation and promoting protection of important fish habitat. This assessment focused on streams designated by the Snake Rier Salmon Recovery Plan as high protection/restoration priority streams, which are are also streams under high development pressure in the Upper Walla Walla River basin where Summer Steelhead spawn and rear.
The assessment of landowner interest was developed to not only identify landowners willing to considered conservation easements but also to help evaluate landowners' thoughts on their land and about development in their area. Through this assessment, landowners became more familiar with conservation opportunities. Outreach information along with the surveys were mailed to 288 households; 61 responded and were contacted by Blue Mountain Land Trust. Four landowners chose to pursue conservation easements and three others were considering them.
Other work completed included creation of a complete database of property ownership, size, habitat quality, and level of threat along four streams; creation of detailed zoning and aerial photo maps of the individual properties; discussion of fish habitat factors with Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife; provision of conservation information to landowners.
