DESCRIPTION
The Umatilla Tribe (CTUIR) constructed rock weirs along a roadway-confined, straightened portion of Patit Creek near Dayton, WA to create pool habitat for juvenile and adult salmonid fishes. They planted native conifers, shrubs and grasses in areas previously devoid of riparian vegetation. And they protected the planted area from grazing through the construction of cattle exclosure fencing and off-channel watering. Patit Creek, a tributary to the Touchet River, is home to ESA-listed steelhead and margined sculpin, a State Sensitive Species and Federal Species of Concern. The objective for this project was to address factors negatively impacting salmonid production in Patit Creek, including excessive water temperatures, sediment loads, and lack of instream pool habitat. They accomplished this through improved channel sinuosity and shading and by allowing the stream to return to its historic channel. The tribes will conduct annual monitoring to track project success and implement adaptive management as necessary. The project involved the cooperation of a private landowner, Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Columbia County Conservation District, and CTUIR. In a separate project, the landowner signed a riparian easement with the CTUIR that will restrict timber harvest, development, and agricultural practices for 15 years within the riparian corridor.
