DESCRIPTION
This project restored 1.5 acres of riparian vegetation and completed a conservation easement on a 132 acre property that includes both sides of a 3/4 mile reach of South Patit Creek in Dayton, Washington. The conservation easement permanently protects this entire 132 acre property by extinguishing development rights, timber harvest, grazing, and agriculture within the sensitive riparian areas and adjacent steep slopes. The conservation easement prevents future intensive grazing, timber harvest, and subdivision and development of the property as well as stream channelization, flood control structures or other alteration of the natural stream course or terrain. The riparian plantings speed up the recovery of the streamside habitat. In addition Blue Mountain Land Trust worked with the landowners to manage weeds on the south facing slope. The easement allows for the construction of one new single family home to replace the existing residence and provide for the continuing use of outbuildings within a designated building envelope. The building envelope may also be used for agricultural purposes. South Patit Creek is considered important for Mid Columbia summer steelhead spawning and is listed as a priority protection reach by the Snake River Salmon Recovery Funding Board.
