DESCRIPTION
The Kachess River Restoration Project will improve spawning, rearing and migratory conditions for ESA listed bull trout. The upper Kachess River is located in the Upper Yakima Watershed in Kittitas County and is a tributary that flows due south into Little Kachess Lake. This project focuses on improving bull trout habitat in a 0.1-mile reach of Kachess River that dewaters annually. Restoration activities will include installation of large wood structures, constructing bar roughness areas, and reconnecting portions of the floodplain. The Phase 1 Kachess River Restoration Project is both timely and important. This work is identified as urgent in the Yakima Bull Trout Action Plan and on the TAG Focus Project List (#22 Bull Trout Stranding and Passage). Bull trout are a priority species in the Yakima Basin and this genetically distinct species is on the brink of extinction. This project takes a holistic approach by improving instream habitat, putting water back onto the floodplain, and harvesting the majority of timber on site to provide forest health benefits. This restoration project is shaped by the best available science, historic data collected from past and current assessment work, and with input from technical experts and partners.
