DESCRIPTION

Two large engineered log jams (ELJ) were constructed, one on each bank of the Cle Elum River, a mile downstream of the Lake Cle Elum Dam. The ELJ’s were strategically located to deflect perennial flow of the water into a reactivated side channel meander (Domerie). The head end of the relic side channel was excavated for about 1,000 feet to create initiating flow into a two mile side channel system and restore salmon spawning and rearing habitat. Six smaller ELJ were constructed in the excavated pilot channel. Four acres of open space and disturbed riparian area, including the tops of the ELJ’s, were planted with native and locally prevalent vegetation.
