Kittitas Conservation Trust (KCT) used this grant to restore and expand salmon and steelhead spawning and rearing habitat within a two mile reach of the lower Cle Elum River in northern Kittitas County (WRIA- 39). The project site is 2 miles downstream of Lake Cle Elum Dam where a regulated flow scenario has simplified instream habitat, eliminated peak winter flows, incised the main-stem channel and decreased the rivers ability to maintain historic side-channel networks. The overall goal of the project was to expand populations of anadromous fish, including Spring Chinook, Mid-Columbia steelhead, Coho, and Sockeye, by increasing instream habitat abundance and complexity and providing perennial side channels for refuge from high velocity flows. KCT constructed ten engineered log jams in the main-stem channel to raise local water elevations and simultaneously divert water into relic side channel systems. They excavated the inlets of 4 side-channels to facilitate restoration of perennial flow into five stream miles (240 acres) of off-channel salmonid rearing habitat and provided native material for spawning gravel nourishment bars in the main-stem. And they strategically placed 25 ballasted and 30 unballasted large snags in the main-stem and side channels to promote natural fluvial processes to enhance instream habitat complexity. Helicopter-assisted construction techniques minimized mobilization impacts to sensitive riparian wetlands and forests in the surrounding geomorphic floodplain.
