Yakima County used this grant to acquire 68.34 acres of Naches River floodplain and river channel north of Yakima. Properites acquired had been documented as "priority acquisition properties" in local watershed and salmon recovery plans. This reach was in a severely degraded state due to confinement, changes in sediment regime and irrigation diversions. The instability of the channel was not only bad for salmon, it presented serious management problems for the infrastructure located in this reach. This acquisition project has allowed for subsequent implementation of a reach-level public infrastructure and restoration program (e.g., pull back of dikes, retirement of existing diversions, reconfiguration of existing roads and other infrastructure, improvement of fish passage, elimination of false attraction flows) that the City of Yakima, Yakima County, and WSDOT are working to accomplish both within the project limits and on adjacent properties. The goal of these projects is to improve instream habitat and floodplain function. These acquisitions also link to the Yakima Greenway, which is also managed for these purposes. This project is expected to benefit Chinook salmon, steelhead, and bulltrout.
