This project sponsored by the Cowiche Canyon Conservancy and City of Yakima used this grant to acquire three parcels totalling 28 acres to protect salmonid habitat. Three of the parcels were restored. The property is located in Yakima County, adjacent to Cowiche Creek. The acquisition and restoration will help conserve and restore the ecological integrity and biological diversity of the Cowiche Creek watershedby protecting parcels containing critical riparian habitats and linking these parcels to existing protected lands. The parcels were acquired to eliminate future development threats that would further degrade riparian, floodplain, and instream functions and habitats. The primary habitat that will be protected and restored is riparian and in-stream habitat. Of the approximately 28 acres acquired, 2.5 acres are riparian. None of the uplans was restored. Three parcels were restored by dike removal, channel reconfiguration, septic tank removal and riparian plantings. The primary species supported are Endangered Species Act listed anadromous fish including spring run Chinook and steelhead. Matching funds for the acquisition were from RCO project #06-1851 sponsored by the City of Yakima. As there were two RCO grants funding the same acquisitions, the acres have been pro-rated beween the two projects based upon a per acre value.
