DESCRIPTION
Kittitas County Conservation District used this funding to address an unscreened surface water diversion, fish passage barrier, and uncontrolled intersection of a canal and a creek. Major tasks included the installation of fish screen and passage structures, removal of a perched culvert and installation of control structures for the canal. The project was on Coleman Creek, a tributary to Naneum Creek which is a tributary to Wilson Creek in Kittitas County. The site is approximately 3.3 stream miles from the Yakima River. The diversion structure was the first of many that block access to miles of habitat. The installation of screening and passage facilities occurred in cooperation with improved on-farm irrigation systems for the landowner and corrections of all other uncontrolled intersections for the canal. The Kittitas County Conservation District sponsored this project as part of the Yakima Tributary Access and Habitat Program (YTAHP). YTAHP was conceived by a consortium of local irrigation and conservation districts, as well as WDFW. The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) awarded the YTAHP core team $2.2 million (FY02-FY04). This funding provides the staff and other infrastructures neccessary to address hundreds of fish screen and passage projects on tributaries of the Yakima River. This site and 10 others in Kittitas and Yakima County were identified as "early action". This project was an exceptional opportunity to take advantage of the resources and expertise provided through the YTAHP and to complement related projects.
