DESCRIPTION
Two fish passage barriers in the Currier/Reecer Creek tributary of the Yakima River were deconstructed and removed. The project facilitated access to 1.7 miles of rearing habitat for Mid-Columbia Steelhead, Spring Chinook, and Coho. Re-sloping and terracing of the banks improved stream morphology and enhanced floodplain functions. The two work sites were revegetated with native species of trees and shrubs to improve riparian habitat quality. Two years of monitoring and stewardship will assure revegetation survival. The regulated flow scenario in the mainstem Yakima River creates rearing conditions that are contrary to the biological needs of juvenile salmonids. Opening passage to tributary habitat offers great opportunity for recovering stocks of depleted salmonid populations. This proposal expanded upon the downstream SRFB barrier removal project (04-1675R) and cumulatively creates fish passage to the confluence of Reecer Creek and the Yakima River.
