DESCRIPTION
Kittitas County Conservation District used this funding to address surface water diversions near the mouth of Reecer Creek that blocked anadromous fish access to the watershed west of Ellensburg. Due to complex negotiations, only the upper diversion structure was corrected during the grant period. The City of Ellensburg later removed the lowermost diversion. The upper diversion serves three private landowners. A gravity system consisting of a dam with checkboards and earthen delivery ditch was replaced by a pump station and 6,200 feet of buried PVC pipelines. The new system included water meters for each landowner and a fish screen at the common intake point on Reecer Creek. The channel spanning diversion dam associated with this diversion was removed allowing for adult and juvenile fish passage year-round. Juvenile spring Chinook had been noted by the Yakima Species Interaction Team (YSIS) downstream of the first barrier, and resident rainbow trout were noted both up and downstream. The diversion dams were migration barriers to the juvenile life history stages of anadromous fish and were likely barriers to adult passage as well. Project implementation increased spawning and rearing habitat by more than two miles. The City of Ellensburg owns adjacent lands and favored the project because it complements both current and future plans to enhance fish habitat on City lands. Positive collaboration between private landowners, tribal biologists, the Conservation District and the City of Ellensburg made the project possible.
