The Cottonwood Flats Habitat Improvement project (Project No. 18-1814) is located between RM 17.5 and RM 17.8 of the Entiat River, tributary to the Upper Columbia River in Chelan County. The purpose of the project was to restore hydraulic connectivity between the Entiat River and its floodplain and to improve connectivity of river flows with adjacent floodplain wetlands. From these actions, the project improved reach-scale instream and off-channel habitat quality and quantity for Endangered Species Act-listed Upper Columbia River spring Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawtscha), steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) throughout various life stages. These benefits were accomplished by creating a floodplain side channel to increase resting and holding areas for juvenile salmonids; strategically placing large wood structures to direct river flow into the restored side channel and increase floodplain connection, encourage lateral channel migration, and add in-stream roughness, complexity, and cover; and by removing anthropogenic impacts such as floodplain fill and bridge abutments to restore wetland habitat, promote floodplain heterogeneity, and restore natural riverine processes. This grant supported the final design, implementation, and post-construction monitoring and planting for the project. Specific restoration metrics accomplished by this project include: a. Creating a 1,300 ft. long floodplain side channel that activates under high flows and down to 500 CFS to increase resting and holding areas for juvenile spring Chinook and steelhead fry. b. Enhanced side channel roughness and habitat by installing 14 large woody material (LWM) structures located through-out the newly constructed side-channel. c. Removed 3,218 cubic yards of floodplain fill to restore wetland habitat, promote wetland heterogeneity, and restore natural riverine processes. d. Removed historical bridge abutments and completed bank restoration on river left that replaced rock revetment installed from the historic bridge with a wood and bio-engineering approach. e. Strategically placed one (1) Engineered Log Jam (ELJ) comprised of 19 logs/structure designed to direct river flow into the restored side channel and increase floodplain connection. f. Strategically placed one (1) Engineered Log Jam (ELJ) comprised of 29 logs/structure that was installed in the footprint of the removed bridge abutment in order to stabilize the bank. g. Restore wetland vegetation community by planting areas that were previous historic road fill and planting along the banks of the newly constructed side channel with 870 wetland plugs, and 3,040 native shrubs and trees.
