DESCRIPTION
The Upper Chumstick Barrier Removal project improved migration conditions for salmonids to and from historical spawning and rearing habitat along the upper portion of Chumstick Creek (RM 7.3-9.8). This project corrected five fish passage barriers. Four (Saliby, Ott/Johnson, Baumann, and Cann) replaced a culvert with new bridges; one (Scheibler) replaced 3 rock barriers with 3 rock pool/chute fishways. Riparian planting was done at 4 worksites: Saliby, Ott/Johnson, Baumann, and Cann. This completed a 15 year effort to remove over 30 barriers within the first 9.8 miles of Chumstick Creek. In 2001, Cascadia Conservation District replaced 8 fish barrier culverts in Chumstick Creek. In 2009, Chelan County Public Works Department replaced the North Road culvert on Chumstick Creek. In 2009, CCNRD removed 17 fish barrier culverts and replaced them with 16 bridges. In 2010, CCNRD removed one more fish passage barrier, an irrigation diversion dam, located just north of the confluence with Sunitsch canyon. Due to development along the creek, a high concentration of stream crossings exist, some of which are barriers to salmonid migration. Barrier removal addressed two habitat limiting factors including up and downstream passage and riparian habitat. These are WDFW sites: 961007, 961008, 961009, 603555, 961010, 961011, 961012, 961013. Previously duplicated as SRP-09-15958 and SRP-09-16929
