DESCRIPTION
This project establishes long-term woody riparian vegetation at the site by combining the installation of 14 large woody debris (LWD) structures along 645 feet of existing bank with an accompanying 100-foot wide approximately 1.9 acre riparian planting area behind it.
In the summer of 2010, Cascadia Conservation District, in partnership with landowners and the US Bureau of Reclamation, undertook a salmon habitat restoration project. This project will not only help salmon recovery, but will also assist landowners by slowing the erosion they were experiencing at abnormal rates on their streambank along the Entiat River. One year and several high flows later, the project is performing as designed and is considered a success.
Prior to restoration, the Preston Reach/Yurt site was experiencing an accelerated erosion rate of approximately 6-10 feet per year. The streambank was vertical, and most of the woody riparian vegetation had been cleared from the bank and the adjoining floodplain leaving a grassy meadow vulnerable to erosion. The floodplain was restored and planted with species such as willows, dogwoods, and alders. The remaining 100 foot width was planted with riparian species such as Ponderosa pine, and native shrubs.
