This project implemented a portion of the Skagit Watershed Council's Restoration and Protection Strategy by systematically identifying and protecting the highest priority salmon habitat in the Upper Skagit. It is an extension of a previous assessment undertaken by the Skagit Land Trust (SLT) and funded by the SRFB, which focused on the middle Skagit River. The objectives were to: 1) provide reach level and parcel specific information on the most important areas for protection of salmon habitat within priority reaches; 2) prioritize parcels based on their habitat value for salmonids, imminent and long-term threats, and priority restoration needs; 3) assess landowner interest in engaging in conservation action; and 4) pending landowner interest, acquire riparian and floodplain habitat. Acquired properties are maintained under Conservancy ownership and managed as part of our Skagit River Bald Engle Natural Area (SRBENA). The SRBENA comprises over 8000 acres owned by 9 different agencies/organizations, including WDFW, USFS, DNR, State Parks, Seattle City Light, and SLT. The work products included: 1) a prioritized list of parcels and associated map products; 2) assessment of landowner's willingness to sell; 3) negotiated purchase and sale agreements; and 4) restoration plans. 167.13 acres of riparian/floodplain salmon habitat and 20.8 upland acres were acquired for $1,160,000 and permenantly protected. Identified restoration activities will occur as needed with additional funding.
