DESCRIPTION
The Jackman Creek Restoration Project is an approximately 26 acre site situated east of Jackman Creek, a tributary of the Skagit River on State Route 20 east of Concrete, Washington. The project site is a conservation property owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The goal of this project was to restore riparian floodplain habitat through planting and invasive plant control. The Skagit River Floodplain is a high priority area for protection and restoration actions in order to recover critical habitat for threatened Chinook salmon. According to the Skagit Chinook Recovery Plan (2005), floodplains provide important freshwater habitat for all Chinook salmon fry, but more expressly for those life history strategies that depend on freshwater habitat for extended rearing such as parr migrants and yearlings. The primary limiting factor for Chinook this project addresses is degradation of riparian area and loss of in-river large woody debris.

In coordination with TNC, Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group (SFEG) conducted non-native invasive plant control at the site to prepare for and protect riparian plantings. Blackberry, holly and Scotch broom were all controlled at the project site. The primary invasive species on the site was Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus discolor). Initial treatment included physical removal using a combination of brush cutters and tractors with brush hogs. Holly and Scotch broom were pulled out using weed wrenches and knotweed on site was also controlled. There was also an old home on the site which was demolished by TNC, after the removal of the home blackberrys in the area were removed.

2.5 acres of riparian plants were planted at the site. Riparian plantings consisted primarily of western red cedar, big leaf maple, snowberry, and vine maple. Other species included willow, cottonwood, and red osier dogwood in moist areas near the river. Many of the plants were installed through volunteer work days. A volunteer event was held on Earth Day of 2008. Riparian planting will add to the already established native vegetation. The site consists of mixed conifers and hardwoods which includes mature groves of western red cedar in central locations. The eastern end of the site has a red alder canopy with an understory dominated by Indian Plum. Other trees include big leaf maple with shoreline areas dominated by black cottonwood.
