DESCRIPTION
This project completed the first phase of this restoration work which included removing approximately 1,150 linear feet of dike downstream of the existing bridge, installing log and rock structures to protect the existing powerline towers, excavating pilot channels on the alluvial fan to encourage channel development, and installing log structures to improve habitat conditions. This will improve channel complexity and instream habitat conditions, restore connectivity with approximately 12.7 acres of alluvial fan, and increase the number and surface area of channels as Illabot Creek migrates over time. Feasibility and design work for this Phase 1 has been completed (SRFB #07-1786) to remove the dikes, install additional bridge crossings, relocate Illabot Creek to an historic channel, and allow for natural sediment deposition and channel development on the alluvial fan. Illabot Creek is a highly productive tributary to the upper Skagit River that supports Chinook, chum, coho, and pink salmon, native char, and steelhead trout. Much of the watershed has already been protected or restored, however an approximately half-mile reach on the historic alluvial fan of Illabot Creek was heavily degraded because the channel was relocated, straightened, and constrained with rip rap dikes to protect the bridge crossing on Rockport-Cascade Road. This changed Illabot Creek to a single channel, reduced channel area and habitat complexity, degraded riparian conditions, and eliminated connectivity with the floodplain and alluvial fan.
