Riparian restoration and protection were implemented on approximately 1.43 acres of land adjacent to an unnamed tributary to Swede Lake. The stream is not known to be fish bearing, and flow typically goes subsurface during the summer. Pre-project two horses had direct access to the channel. The existing riparian zone consists of an overstory of mature alder trees. Understory consists of native shrubs along the southern end of the creek, and an extensive area of non-native blackberry on the northern end of the property.
Restoration activities included construction of a1,00 foot fence which will exclude livestock from the riparian zone. The exclusion area will average 35-feet on each side of the stream, increasing to 125-feet on the northeast property corner. Non-native vegetation was cleared from the exclusion zone, and 300 native plants were installed in the understory of the existing riparian stand. Plantings will consisted of primarily conifers with a spacing of approximately 20-feet. Plants were protected from predation by voles and other rodents by installing protective tubes.
Skagit County Public installed 1 squashed galvanized culvert and covered said structure with native soil to facilitate livestock crossing. A fence was also constructed in the riparian area to prevent livestock access to the stream channel.
