DESCRIPTION
The Silver Creek Riparian Habitat Restoration Project is along Silver Creek in the town of Alger near the intersection of SR-99 and Lake Samish Rd. The objective of the project was to improve riparian and in-stream habitat along Silver Creek by removing invasive species and replanting with new native ones.
This project included the planting of 450 native trees and shrubs in the riparian planting area divided into two sections: east and west. The eastern portion has an average riparian buffer of 35 feet from the creek and the western portion was extended to 180 feet. Areas that had already been supporting trees were under-planted with conifers and native shrubs at a density of approximately 20-ft x20-ft. Areas that were currently open were planted with a mix of conifers and native shrubs at a density of approximately 10-ft x 10-ft. Site maintenance will continue through 2015.
Final designs and permit documents were developed for this project as part a Department of Ecology grant (WA120309-6-8). The Silver Creek Riparian Habitat Restoration design project was lead by Skagit County Public Works (SCPW) in partnership with Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group (SFEG) with the goal of design and permitting restoration actions to improve riparian habitat. This project was part of the Skagit County Natural Resources Stewardship Program.
