DESCRIPTION
This project removes rip-rap bank and a short levee from the left bank of the Skagit River near Barnaby Slough to restore the natural development of river edge habitat and natural function of the off-channel habitat of unnamed slough. The rip-rap currently in place reduces rearing habitat quality in the Skagit River, reduces off-channel rearing habitat area by preventing low summer river flows from entering the unnamed slough, and prevents natural channel migration from creating off-channel habitats over the long-term. For several species of salmon, river edge habitats lined with rock rip-rap provide significantly less rearing habitat than natural banks. This project removes rip-rap bank protection and allows natural edge habitats to form in this reach of the Skagit River. Several salmon species use sloughs such as the unnamed slough for spawning and rearing. Removal of the levee blocking the upstream end of the slough will increase summer rearing area and may increase winter spawning area. Off-channel habitats are created by river channel migration across the floodplain, providing vast areas of high-quality rearing habitats in a watershed over the long term. Removal of the rip-rap will allow the Skagit River to migrate laterally in this reach and restore its ability to create off-channel habitats. Partial funding for the removal of the rip-rap is available from WDFW in the form of equipment and manpower to pull rip-rap from the bank.
