DESCRIPTION
The Skagit Conservation District used this funding to protect in perpetuity and to restore critical and preferred salmon spawning and rearing habitat on 4.2 acres along the Samish River. Target stocks include coho. The property will return to natural habitat conditions including the following: reduction of water temperature and excess nutrient inputs, restoration of historic floodplain hydrologic conditions, future large woody debris recruitment, increased bank stability and subsequent decrease in sedimentation, and the return of a natural channel migration zone. The Skagit Watershed Council endorsed this project as consistent with its salmon recovery strategy. This project builds upon the success of nearby Riparian Habitat Program easements and restoration (RCO #97-1272).
