DESCRIPTION
King County used this funding for an acquisition and design project between river miles 7.3 and 7.6 on the Cedar River. The project consisted of the following elements: · Acquisition of 3.22 acres to help provide adequate space for overbank flows and off channel habitat · Planning for the removal of over 500 feet of bank armoring · Planning for floodplain and riparian area revegetation on over 10 acres · Planning of large woody debris placement in the floodplain to create hydraulic complexity and facilitate natural formation of off channel and side channel habitat These elements in the completed project address the following problems: an inaccessible floodplain, invasive plant species in floodplain and riparian zone, lack of woody debris, lack of sufficient off-channel rearing and refugia habitat, poor quality spawning habitat, and lack of adequate space to accommodate natural riverine and habitat forming processes. This project was identified in the WRIA 8 Near-Term Action Agenda. The Cedar River Chinook run is one of the only documented native Chinook runs within WRIA 8, and this project provided spawning and rearing habitat for Chinook as well as coho, sockeye, steelhead, and cutthroat trout.
