DESCRIPTION
King County used this funding for the Cedar Rapids Restoration project, which restored 1,850 feet of riparian and floodplain habitat along a WRIA 8 high-ranked reach of the Cedar River. Historic levees along this reach constricted, reduced, and degraded instream and riparian habitat for Chinook salmon. The project reach contained very few pools and lacked large woody material; off-channel habitat was inaccessible or lacking. The riverbed was incised and spawning gravel was limited by high velocity flows. The project restored a more natural channel form and improved aquatic, riparian, and off-channel floodplain habitats in this important Chinook spawning and rearing area. The project removed levees and bank armoring, reconnected high flows to the adjacent floodplain, restored instream channel, gravel bar, and pool habitats, and recreated riparian floodplain and side-channel habitats. Removal of bank armoring and added large wood increased spawning habitat along the main channel margins and reconnected rearing habitat along the mainstem and side channel areas. Riparian habitat was improved by removing invasive species from the channel banks and from seven acres of floodplain, and by replanting with native tree and shrub species. Flood protection facilities were set back from the channel to protect adjacent homes and infrastructure.
