DESCRIPTION
Tacoma Water?s Pipeline #4 crossing over Swan Creek was constructed in the 1930?s using outdated standards. The culverts were undersized for the current flow regime and the concrete culvert, headwall, and apron configuration resulted in severe downstream streambed degradation over the past 80 years, becoming a barrier to fish. The 2019 fish passage improvement project removed existing fill, culverts, headwalls, and aprons at the pipeline crossing at Swan Creek. A new stream channel was created to replace the previously culverted reach and a new 150-foot pedestrian bridge was built over the stream to support the pipeline. LWD pieces and structures were placed in the new stream channel. Site was replanted to re-vegetate riparian zone and to control erosion.
