DESCRIPTION
Original project number #12-Chambers-01 The Garrison Springs Creek and Estuary restoration project, located in the Town of Steilacoom, will restore a fresh water creek and estuarine habitat along Chambers Bay that was previously lost to industrial development over 100 years ago. The Creek currently flows through the site through several culverts and under a derelict paved area before discharging directly into Chambers Bay and the Puget Sound. Without public investment over the next 2 years, the opportunity to restore Garrison Springs Creek may be lost forever. The Creek is piped through a 71-acre former industrial site that is being redeveloped into housing, parks, and recreational trails over the next five years. The Town of Steilacoom and the landowner are working together to identify public funding to restore Garrison Springs Creek prior to the redevelopment occurring. If public funds cannot be identified, it is likely that the redevelopment will proceed forward and the Creek will remain piped underground, rather than daylighted. Restoring the Creek and establishing an off-channel pocket estuary will provide new fish habitat that is much needed in the Puget Sound and provide an opportunity for the public to observe and learn about the value of the estuary. This funding request is for the acquisition and restoration phase of the project. A subsequent development phase is envisioned to allow for a viewing platform, ADA parking, and trail access
