This project built upon Engineered Log Jam (ELJ) and road removal work already funded through the SRFB in 2006 and completed in 2010. In 2010 five engineered log jams were placed and 3/4 of a mile section of road was removed from the floodplain. This project contiued work downstream through the installation of 8 more mid-channel engineered log jams and removal of the remaining 1/4 section of road. In total, this phase II project placed 336 key pieces logs, 1200 racking logs, 1600 cubic yards of slash, and removed 27,000 cubic yards of road fill and armor rock from the floodplain. These structures are placed with the intent to successfully restore the channel vertical elevation, promote lateral movement and floodplain connectivity, increase gravel sorting and retention, and provide pool habitat for adult and juvenile fish. This project will jump-start recovery of critical salmon habitat lost in the 1970s when much of the watershed was altered by removing virtually all standing and instream trees from the Greenwater Valley, for the purpose of recovering Puyallup River salmon stocks as identified in the WRIA 10 Salmon Recovery Strategy.
