DESCRIPTION
South Prairie Creek, the primary tributary to the Carbon River, is the most important salmonid spawning area in the Puyallup watershed, producing nearly half of all the wild steelhead in the Puyallup River system, the only significant run of pink salmon, and important returns of Chinook, coho, chum salmon and sea-run cutthroat trout. The high quality habitat along the stream is currently threatened with increasing development pressures from nearby towns and county urbanized areas, and numerous studies have shown the need for habitat protection and restoration. The Lead Entity has ranked S. Prairie Creek as one of its top priority reaches for habitat protection in their Salmon Habitat Protection and Restoration Strategy. This project will acquire and restore about 100 acres of highly ranked riparian habitat identified by the S. Prairie Creek Action Plan, funded in SRFB 3rd round in 2001. The Action Plan identified and ranked the fifteen top priority properties for habitat protection based on evaluation of parcel characteristics and salmon habitat value. One of the top ranked properties in the study was the Inglin Farm, comprising 100 acres of potential forested floodplain habitat. This project will include funds ($425,000) from IAC #021584 to preserve and restore this important property. This project will address primary fish recovery, habitat protection, and geographic objectives outlined in the WRIA 10/12 salmon recovery strategy.
