DESCRIPTION
South Prairie Creek, the primary tributary to the Carbon River, is the most important salmonid spawning area in the Puyallup watershed, producing nearly half of all the wild steelhead in the Puyallup River system, the only significant run of pink salmon, and important returns of chinook, coho, chum salmon and sea-run cutthroat trout. The high quality habitat along the stream is currently threatened with increasing development pressures from nearby towns and county urbanized areas. Pierce County recently ranked S. Prairie Creek as its #1 priority for habitat protection in the WRIA 10/12 Salmon Habitat Protection and Restoration Strategy. This project proposes the acquisition of priority properties along S. Prairie Creek based on the results of the S. Prairie Creek Action Plan funded in the 3rd Round of SRFB grants in 2001. The SRFB-funded Action Plan identified and ranked the fifteen top priority properties for habitat protection based on a careful evaluation of parcel characteristics and salmon habitat value. Preserving these properties would address the primary fish recovery, habitat protection, and geographic objectives outlined in the WRIA 10/12 salmon recovery strategy. In partnership with Pierce County, Cascade Land Conservancy proposes to acquire up to three of the top fifteen priority properties through fee acquisition or conservation easements.
