DESCRIPTION
The Nisqually Coummunity Forest, a subsidiary of the Nisqually Land Trust, and the Nisqually Indian Tribe will coordinate creation of a community forest in the Nisqually Watershed. A community forest is a working forest that is owned and managed for the benefit of the community of which it is naturally a part. The community participates in management decisions, and the forest is managed to provide a suite of benefits, typically including sustainable forestry and tourism jobs; recreation and education; and environmental benefits such as clean water and healthy wildlife habitat. This project will identify key ownership and management partners; determine the broad outline of what lands the forest should encompass; create a legal ownership entity for the forest; and work with project partners to acquire appropriate properties. This includes riparian and upland forest habitat protection through fee acquisition of working forest lands in the Nisqually Watershed. Target properties outside of the Busy Wild Creek and Middle Mashel River corridors are yet to be determined.
