DESCRIPTION
This grant provided funding to the Nisqually Land Trust. The Mashel River is the primary salmon spawning and rearing tributary in the Nisqually River watershed. It is vital to the production, abundance and diversity of Nisqually fall Chinook and steelhead. Because the Mashel is threatened by shoreline development and sprawl from the rapidly growing Eatonville area, one of the elements of the Nisqually Chinook Recovery Plan is to acquire Mashel shoreline property for permanent protection. This project was a first phase to address this element of the recovery plan. It took a major step in protecting against the shoreline development threat by acquiring for permanent protection four properties, including 52 acres and .85 miles of shoreline, along the Mashel River. One of the parcels includes the confluence of the Mashel and Little Mashel rivers, an area proposed for future instream restoration work (funded separately from this project).
