DESCRIPTION
As a part of the Mashel River Eatonville Reach Protection and Restoration Initiative, the Nisqually Land Trust acquired a 4.8 acre property including 500 feet of the Mashel River shoreline. The Mashel River is the largest tributary to the Nisqually River, near Eatonville in Pierce County. This property acquired through this project connects shoreline owned by the Town of Eatonville upstream and downstream of the project area. This portion of the Mashel River contains important habitat for Chinook salmon and steelhead trout. The Land Trust removed debris from the property and initiated riparian and floodplain reforestation throughout the property. Invasive weeds, including Himalayan blackberry and Scotch broom were controlled on the site, and over 2,800 native trees and shrubs were planted. The property will be transferred to the Town of Eatonville in 2017.
