DESCRIPTION
The Nisqually Stream Stewards is a free program that teaches Nisqually Watershed residents about the importance of stream health, involving them in the monitoring of their local streams and improving overall health of the watershed. This program introduces them to natural resource professionals and gives them hands-on field experience, including real-life data collection and analysis and learning about wildlife as part of watershed's culture, economy, and environment. Stream Stewards attend weekly classes and field tours that discuss environmental issues that not only have an effect on their community, but the entire Puget Sound region. Education and awareness empower participants to apply what they've learned to their lives, but also to share this knowledge with others. Participants are provided with over 40 hours of class time, and in return, are asked to volunteer 40 hours of time with community organizations Classes begin the first week of August. The budget represents what it will take to run the program for the next 4 years.
