DESCRIPTION
The South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group and partners completed in-stream and riparian restoration activities within Reach 7 of the Mashel River, near Eatonville, WA, to improve salmon habitat and physical processes. This stream restoration project included the construction of nine large woody debris (LWD) elements (engineered log jams), bank roughening and armor removal, re-connection of two side channels, and approximately five acres of riparian planting. The original concept was for twelve log jams to be constructed however the number was reduced down to nine due to challenges with potential flood damage, as indicated by the flood modelling. This section of the Mashel River has been a high restoration priority in both the Nisqually Chinook Recovery Plan and Nisqually Steelhead Recovery Plan. In the Mashel River Restoration Design Report (Watershed Professionals Network, 2004), loss of habitat diversity was the single largest limiting factor within this section of the Mashel River. The LWD elements installed through this project will increase spawning gravel and pools for multiple species of salmon, and steelhead. The reconnected side channels are predicted to increase high flow refugia; riparian plantings are predicted to increase shade and woody debris inputs. Prior to construction activities, the 38 acre project area was surveyed for cultural resources. Post-construction, 5 acres were planted with native riparian tress and shrubs; 1 acre was treated for invasive weed control. Matching funds for the project were contributed by the Nisqually Indian Tribe for the in-stream structure placement and cultural resources assessment.
