DESCRIPTION
The Mashel River in the vicinity of the town of Eatonville was degraded for several survival attributes affecting multiple life stages of fall Chinook. Restoration opportunities were apparent (i.e., restoration of functional channel configuration, riparian/wetland vegetation planting), but several constraints to implementation remained.
Through this assessment a team of habitat restoration professionals worked with key property owners and civic leaders in the town of Eatonville to develop restoration opportunities. The deliverable product was a comprehensive Mashel River (Eatonville Vicinity) Restoration Plan, developed in cooperation with the Town of Eatonville and key private landowners, for the portion of the Mashel River running from RM 3.2 to RM 6.0. Site-specific restoration projects resulted from this assessment in the identified reach.
This project was identified as a high priority in the Nisqually Chinook Recovery Plan, as Action item 1.2.2.2. The protection and restoration of Mashel River in the vicinity of Eatonville benefited Nisqually fall chinook, coho, and pink salmon, as well as cutthroat and steelhead trout. This project was also specifically identified in the Limiting Factors Analysis for the Nisqually Watershed.
