DESCRIPTION
Kitsap County utilized these critical funds for bulkhead removal and shoreline restoration design and permitting on private residential properties. Kitsap County partnered with Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group to increase project management capacity and expertise. This project developed preliminary designs for three bulkhead removal - shoreline restoration projects, initiated permitting, and built off of the success of previous nearshore efforts. Willing landowners were identified through outreach efforts of the existing Shore Friendly Kitsap program. The Shore Friendly program teed up these projects by completing site-specific feasibility reports by licensed coastal geologists and performed investigations of other factors such as structure setback, neighbor buy-in, septic location, and other utilities. The projects were ranked using the Nearshore Restoration Prioritization tool developed for West Sound and vetted by the West Sound Partners for Ecosystem Recovery Lead Entity. This evaluation ensured projects were selected for their nearshore benefits including sediment transport processes (sediment sources will have higher priority), forage fish habitats and impacted species, and project size. The project sites within this project portfolio were Rose Point Embayment Restoration (Kingston), Smith Bulkhead Removal and Restoration (Battle Point, Bainbridge Island), and Dyes Inlet Lagoon Bulkhead Removal (Silverdale). The goals of these projects include restoring sediment transport processes, tidal flow and tidal inundation processes to improve beach and embayment nearshore habitats for forage fish spawning and out-migrating salmonids, included ESA listed Chinook.
