DESCRIPTION
This project restores historic feeder bluff function at Pritchard Park (Wyckoff Superfund Site) in Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island. The project is updrift of a recently created forage fish spawning beach and other intertidal habitat at Pritchard Park and benefits local and regional salmon stocks. The project removed failing bulkhead along the bluff, helped relocate a driveway to the Wyckoff Superfund Treatment Plant away from the top of the unstable bluff, and restores riparian vegetation. The bluff experienced a major slide in previous winters and the road which provided the primary access to the Superfund site was in risk of being lost, until relocated as part of the first phase of this project. Access to the treatment plant was required to be maintained and once the driveway was relocted the second phase of the project removed the bulkhead, created a pocket beach and restored vegetation, restoring ecological functions important to salmon recovery and furthering our long-term goals for improving the Eagle Harbor nearshore ecosystem. The project isin close view of the busiest ferry route in the state and provided a significant opportunity to educate the public about the need to restore nearshore habitat and salmon recovery.
