Great Peninsula Conservancy proposes to a) protect approximately 61 acres of Carpenter Creek estuary and riparian habitat and b) complete  final designs to replace a culvert with a span bridge on W Kingston Rd at the mouth of Carpenter Creek.  GPC will acquire a conservation easement over 36.5 acres and fee ownership of 25 acres to protect 95% of the estuary and its surrounding undeveloped, forested shorelines, salt marshes, freshwater wetlands and riparian habitat on three properties.   The future  W Kingston Rd culvert replacement will provide unconstrained tidal flows and enhanced upstream fish-passage to 5 miles of fish bearing Carpenter Creek mainstem. Located near Kingston on N Kitsap peninsula, Carpenter Creek estuary is identified as a key pocket estuary for juvenile salmon because of its location along the migratory route to the Pacific ocean.  It is one of the few remaining intact, undeveloped, forested, intertidal   embayments in South Central Puget Sound. Beach seining by the Suquamish Tribe and WDFW indicates a diverse range of salmonids (ESA listed chinook, pinks, chum, coho and cutthroat) and high numbers of forage fish in the estuary. Stillwaters Environmental Center will continue to engage school children and the larger community in monitoring the estuary before and after future replacement of W Kingston Rd culvert with a span bridge.
